GANSPRO — Gai Needy Students Project

What we believe
What most students here lack is not ability but access. A place to learn, the tools to learn with, and somewhere to show what they have learned. GANSPRO works to supply those missing conditions, one at a time.

What we do
GANSPRO supports schools and students across our community. Our work is not tied to a single program — what we do shifts with what a student is missing.

Our student division — Megaphone
The student side of GANSPRO is run by Megaphone, an entirely student-led division. Because it is students who design and run it, we do not guess at need from the outside — we judge it from within.

Megaphone's principal initiative is a Scholarship Fund. Its first program brought a poetry competition to five schools in Kenya. More than 1,000 poems were submitted; fifteen students were selected to receive partial support toward their school fees.

We chose poetry deliberately. Poetry asks nothing of a student: no textbooks, no tutoring, no laboratory. It asks only for paper and something true to say. It is the one contest where the poorest student in the room competes on equal ground.

We did not expect a thousand poems. That number told us what these students had been missing was never something to say — it was somewhere to say it.

What we gave was part of a school fee, not all of it, and we say so plainly. But part of a fee is not the same as nothing. Students leave school not because the whole amount is missing, but because the last of it is. That is the stretch we cover.

What comes next
GANSPRO is expanding into learning materials, literacy and writing programs, and partnerships with local schools. The Scholarship Fund is one part of that work, not the whole of it. Our goal is not a single act of support, but a student who learns to the end.
