The Kenya Schools Poetry Contest was launched to foster creative expression and broaden educational opportunities in underserved communities. Its primary goal was to empower children to discover and amplify their own voices by providing meaningful opportunities to engage in creative writing and literature.
Recognizing that creative writing serves as a powerful medium for personal reflection and cultural connection, the project provided students with a new platform to express their identities and lived experiences. The initiative began at Muthainga Academy in Kenya with a contest centered on personal identity, and subsequently expanded across five local schools to explore broader themes of personal and community transformation.
The initiative included:
- Operating online tutoring sessions led by Megaphone student volunteers in core subjects and poetry writing.
- Hosting the first contest around the prompt "What is your favorite color?", receiving over 500 original poem submissions.
- Expanding the initiative to five Kenyan schools for a second contest centered on the themes of change, growth, and movement, which drew 1,800 submissions.
Five hundred poems the first year. Eighteen hundred the second. The students came back — and brought others.
Beyond a simple writing competition, the Poetry Contest represents a youth-led initiative aimed at building cross-cultural understanding through storytelling.
For Kenyan students, who explored topics ranging from how the color brown reflects their daily lives to reflections on emotional and personal growth, it opened new pathways to self-expression; for Megaphone members, it became a deeply meaningful experience of global civic engagement and mutual learning.
