AI Governance and Children’s Rights
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly shaping how children learn, communicate, and access information. As a high school student following human rights and technology issues, one important finding from this report is that global AI regulations still do not consistently consider children’s rights. Among eight international and regional AI frameworks reviewed, three made no direct reference to children or other vulnerable groups, showing a major gap in current policies.
Different countries are taking different approaches to regulating AI. The European Union’s AI Act explicitly recognizes children as a vulnerable group that requires protection, while China’s regulatory framework also includes several references to children in its guidelines. In contrast, the United Kingdom and India have limited or no AI-specific protections focused on children.
From the perspective of running the Megaphone platform, this report highlights an important issue for young people: the digital systems shaping our lives are being built faster than the rules designed to protect us. As AI becomes more integrated into education, social media, and public services, stronger regulations will be necessary to ensure children can safely benefit from the digital world without their rights being overlooked.
