Beyond Survival: Protecting Children in Conflict

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) and War Child have announced a five-year strategic partnership aimed at expanding support for children growing up in conflict and humanitarian crises. As wars and displacement continue to affect millions of families, children face increasing risks,violence, family separation, recruitment by armed groups, trauma, and long disruptions to their education.

Through this partnership, IRC’s global humanitarian network will work alongside War Child’s expertise in child protection, education, and mental health programs. Together, they plan to strengthen systems that support children not only during emergencies but throughout long-term crises. Their initiatives include providing psychosocial support, preventing the recruitment of children into armed groups, promoting play-based learning environments, and helping caregivers support children under stress.

The collaboration also highlights the importance of research, local partnerships, and joint advocacy. By sharing evidence and working closely with communities and policymakers, IRC and War Child hope to ensure that children’s rights remain central in humanitarian and policy discussions.

This partnership highlights an important lesson: protecting children in conflict is not only about immediate relief. Long-term support systems,education, mental health care, and stable community networks,are essential for helping children recover and rebuild their futures.
