Children’s Rights in the Digital Environment

This report highlights an important challenge for today’s digital generation: while online platforms such as social media, gaming, and video-sharing services provide opportunities for learning and connection, they also expose children to risks like exploitation, harmful content, and privacy violations. Governments are increasingly introducing regulations to make digital spaces safer, but these policies must be carefully designed to protect children while respecting rights such as privacy and freedom of expression.

Across many countries, similar regulatory expectations are emerging for technology companies. These include privacy- and safety-by-design systems, risk assessments, age-verification tools, detection of harmful content, complaint mechanisms, and transparency reporting. These measures aim to ensure platforms actively prevent harm rather than responding only after problems occur.

From the perspective of running the Megaphone platform as a high school student, this issue shows why youth voices are important in shaping digital policy. Young people are among the most active users of digital platforms, yet they are rarely involved in discussions about how these technologies are regulated. Megaphone can help highlight the connection between technology, children’s rights, and digital safety, encouraging broader conversations about how the online world can remain both innovative and safe for young users.
