Digital Gender Gap: Whose Voices Shape AI?

 Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming education, work, and communication, but many experts warn that women and girls may not be equally protected in this digital future. To better understand this issue, UNESCO launched a regional survey in the Caribbean titled “Perception of AI Fairness and Online Safety among Women and Girls.” 

The goal is to collect data on how women and girls experience online spaces, including problems such as online harassment, privacy risks, and gender bias in AI systems.

For me, this initiative highlights that the digital gender gap is no longer only about internet access. It is also about who feels safe online, whose voices shape technology, and who is represented in AI systems.

UNESCO plans to use the survey results to develop policy recommendations and will share findings at a regional workshop on Human Rights Day in December 2025. Listening to women and girls, the project argues, is essential for building AI systems that are fair, inclusive, and respectful of human rights.
