Gender Equality and Inclusive Education

The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) has placed gender equality at the center of education reform through its GPE 2025 strategy, integrating gender considerations into planning, financing, and policy dialogue. As a result, all GPE implementation grants now include at least one activity promoting gender equality, and the share of funding supporting gender-focused initiatives increased from 34% to 68%. Programs such as the Girls’ Education Accelerator and Ethiopia’s expansion of 1,400 Inclusive Education Resource Centers show how targeted investments can help reach students facing barriers related to poverty, disability, displacement, or conflict.

Looking ahead, GPE 2030 strengthens this approach by emphasizing intersectionality, recognizing that gender inequality often overlaps with other factors such as disability, refugee status, and climate vulnerability.

Reading about this approach reshaped how I think about education and human rights. Expanding access to school is important, but real progress requires understanding the overlapping barriers that prevent many children,especially girls,from fully participating in education.

For a youth platform like Megaphone, these lessons highlight the importance of amplifying stories and research that connect gender equality, education access, and global development. Keeping the focus on those most at risk of being left behind is essential if education systems are truly going to become inclusive and equitable.
