Six Years to SDG4: Confronting the Global Education Gap

With only six years remaining until the 2030 deadline, global education leaders gathered at UNESCO to assess progress toward SDG4: Quality Education for All. Despite international commitments, the education gap remains alarming. Today, 128 million boys and 122 million girls are still out of school worldwide, while 57% of children lack basic learning skills. According to a new report by UNESCO, OECD, and the Commonwealth Secretariat, the global cost of this learning crisis could reach $10 trillion annually.

The meeting emphasized that accelerating progress will require not only stronger policies but also greater investment in education, including innovative financing mechanisms such as debt swaps for education. Leaders stressed that education transformation must prioritize inclusive, equitable systems that reach the most marginalized learners.

From my perspective as a student studying global education inequality, these numbers highlight a critical challenge: commitments alone are not enough. If the world hopes to meet SDG4 by 2030, governments, institutions, and communities must work together to close the education funding gap and ensure that every child has access to meaningful learning opportunities.
