Students Can Move the Issue Forward

In Malaysia, students created the #MakeSchoolASaferPlace movement to address sexual harassment and violence in schools. They used social media to share experiences, created a safer space for reporting abuse, and launched a petition supported by civil society groups and members of parliament. The campaign helped push school safety into a wider policy discussion.

What stands out is that students did not wait for adults to define the problem first. They identified it from their own experience and built the campaign around what students actually needed.

That is a useful lesson for the way I think about advocacy: the people closest to a problem often see what institutions miss. Leadership can begin by making that experience impossible to ignore.
