When Education Becomes a Target

A new update from the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack warns that violence against education is accelerating at an alarming pace. The organization reports that attacks on schools, universities, students, and teachers increased by more than 40% during 2024–2025, with over 8,500 documented attacks across 83 countries. More than 10,600 students, educators, and academic staff were killed, injured, abducted, or otherwise harmed.

What makes these findings especially concerning is that schools are no longer suffering only from the indirect consequences of conflict, they are increasingly becoming deliberate targets. The report documents a sharp rise in the military use of schools, drone strikes on educational facilities, and attacks involving explosive weapons. These are not isolated incidents; they reflect a broader pattern in which education itself is being caught in the logic of war.

Viewed through a human rights lens, the consequences extend far beyond damaged buildings. Every school that closes interrupts learning, weakens community stability, and limits children's opportunities long after the fighting ends. Education is often described as the foundation of recovery, yet this report suggests it is also one of the first institutions to collapse when conflict intensifies.
